I am a fan of “Math Chats” even with the older students. I find that spending time “Talking” about maths with my students is the perfect opportunity to find out what the students know and don’t know about a concept. Our Math Vocabulary Resources are the perfect springboard into prior knowledge discussions.

A quick 5 minute brainstorm activity, listing related math words and their meaning saves a whole world of confusion. It also helps the kids feel knowledgable about maths BEFORE they’ve even solved a math problem!

So learning math words is a ‘MUST’ in all my math lessons! 

And there’s a ton of research to support the importance of teaching math vocabulary too.

Yep! Researchers have found that spending time on building math vocabulary correlates to student achievement levels. And the more extensive the students’  vocabulary the higher their math results!

 Studies by Swan & Dunstan; Hirsh & Nation found:

• vocabulary is connected with reading comprehension and is predictor of students’ comprehension
• Students need to know 90-95% of the words in a text before they can comprehend that text
• Vocabulary needs to be explicitly taught first
• Students from low socioeconomic areas need greater support
• Teaching math vocabulary can help raise student achievement levels
• Students with high vocabulary are better at mathematical reasoning

So it’s pretty clear that including math vocabulary activities is a winner!
