Long vowel sounds are among the first reading skills to be taught in phonics-based learning programs and teachers need to explicitly teach students each Long vowel family, highlighting that certain letter combinations can make a vowel short or long (such as “pin” and “pine”). Additionally, different spelling variations can end up making the exact same sound (such as “rain” and “date”).
Unfortunately, the long o vowel sound can be tricky to teach because it has lots of different spelling variations like:
- o – as in go, so, no
- o-e, as in bone, dome, pole
- oa- as in coat, coal, load
- ow – as in brow, snow
- ey – as in monkey, key
- oe – as in toe
