Long vowel sounds are among the first reading skills to be taught in phonics-based learning programs.
Making the link between sounds and spellings can be a difficult concept to grasp, so Educators need to teach their students that certain letter combinations can make a vowel short or long (such as “pin” and “pine”) and those different spelling variations can make the exact same sound (such as “rain” and “date”).
Like many long vowels sounds the long i sound can be tricky for students to grasp because there are five different spelling patterns for the Long i sound.
- i – as in item, ivory, idea
- i-e – as in ice, bike, vine
- igh – as in high, night, bright
- ie – as in die, pie, cried
- y- my, cry, rhyme
