Long vowel sounds are among the first sounds to be taught as part of early years phonics-based learning programs and making the link between sounds and spellings can be a difficult concept to grasp. Teachers need to help students to understand that certain letter combinations can make a vowel short or long (such as “pin” and “pine”) and that different spelling variations can end up making the exact same sound (such as “rain” and “date”).
Unfortunately, the long e sound can be tricky to teach because it has lots of different ways to spell it and there are seven different spelling patterns for the Long e sound.
- e – as in me, be, she, he
- e-e, as in eve, these, here
- ea- as in meat, eat, tea
- ee – as in bee, teeth
- ey – as in monkey, key
- ie – as in field, thief
- y- as in baby
