Long vowel sounds are among the first reading skills to be taught in phonics-based learning programs.
Making the link between sounds and spellings can be a difficult concept to grasp.
Teachers need to help students to understand that certain letter combinations can make a vowel short or long (such as “pin” and “pine”) and that different spelling variations can end up making the exact same sound (such as “rain” and “date”).
Unfortunately, the long a sound can be tricky to teach because it has lots of different ways to spell it and there are eight different spelling patterns for the Long a sound.
- a – as in baby
- a_e – as in cake
- ai – as in rain
- ay – as in play
- ei – as in vein
- eigh – as in weigh
- ea- as in meat
- ey – as in they
