What is KUBJ Letter Order
This collection of resources is based on requests by our members who follow an alternative order to the SATPIN sequence. The KUBJ sequence is a phonics teaching framework used in many Australian schools to guide the order in which phonemes are introduced. While the acronym might be unfamiliar to some, it’s essentially a structured sequence that supports systematic synthetic phonics instruction.
It typically follows this order:
- K – Most common single-letter sounds
- U – Useful blends and digraphs
- B – Beginning and ending sounds
- J – Joined sounds and more complex phoneme patterns
Understanding this sequence helps teachers scaffold phonics instruction in a developmentally appropriate and logical way.
Why Use KUBJ in Your Classroom?
- Helps students develop strong sound-letter knowledge from simple to complex
- It’s systematic and sequential – great for early readers
- Aligns well with the Australian Curriculum v9.0 literacy outcomes
- Supports decodable reading and writing practice
