So what is a Digraph?
- A digraph is a combination of two letters that make a single sound like ch in chick or watch.
- Digraph sounds are different to the individual sounds of the letters. They cannot be sounded out, which means they need some explicit teaching or they can hinder student reading fluency.
- They can be made up of vowels or consonants and are taught as part of phonics programs in Kindergarten, Reception, Preps and First Grade.
- They are not found just at the beginning of words, they can also be in the middle or make the final sound in words too.
- They are often confused with ‘Blends’- Digraphs are not blends because each sound of the 2 letters can still be heard.
- There is no ‘Ch’ blend- other blends include: bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, sc, sl, sm, sp, st, tr
