In addition to all this most schools require an integrated approach to science that incorporates the opportunity to apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematical understanding… or STEM!
If all this sounds like good old fashioned integration, then you’re right!
Educators have been integrating learning areas since… forever, so STEM is nothing new.
In fact if you don’t integrate subjects in today’s crowded curriculum you’ll never get through it all by the end of the year!
What is new is the emphasis made by Governments to prioritise the development of STEM skill for students. This is an attempt to make sure students are fully equipped with the skills for the workforce, including:
- problem solving
- creativity
- critical analysis
- teamwork
- independent thinking
- initiative
- communication
- digital literacy
So taking a STEM approach to teaching science is more important than ever!
But before you break into a panic over extra workload, STEM isn’t something to be taught as a separate subject! YAY. It’s a set of skills that can easily be integrated into the science learning area!
With this in mind we’re creating a range of Year 1 Science Resources that not only support the learning of scientific concepts but also include STEM based projects.
Below you’ll find a set of STEM projects that will allow students to apply the science they have learnt to solve a specific problem.
