FAQs – Free Long Vowel Word Lists

Quick guide to long vowels

What is a long vowel?
A long vowel makes the sound of its letter name, such as the /ā/ in cake or the /ī/ in kite.
What’s the difference between short and long vowels?
Short vowels make their short sounds (cat, bed, pig), while long vowels “say their name” (cake, tree, kite).
When should long vowels be taught?
Long vowels are typically introduced after short vowels, often in Year 1, once students are confident with basic CVC patterns.
What spelling patterns make long vowel sounds?
Long vowels can be spelled with CVCe (magic e), vowel teams (ai, ee, oa), and sometimes with y at the end of words (fly, cry).
What difficulties do students face with long vowels?
Students often confuse which spelling pattern to use. Grouping words into lists by sound helps build recognition and spelling accuracy.
