Letters and Sounds FAQs

A quick guide to Teaching Beginning Sounds

What is Letters and Sounds and why is it important?
Letters and Sounds is a systematic phonics program that introduces children to beginning sounds in a clear sequence. Starting with SATPIN helps students quickly blend and decode simple words. Teaching beginning sounds early gives students the tools to recognise letters, link them to sounds, and build the foundations of reading and spelling.
What phases are in Letters and Sounds?
There are six phases. Beginning sounds are introduced in Phase 2 with sets like SATPIN, followed by DGOULF and MGDOCK. Each phase builds on the last so children move from hearing sounds to reading words and sentences. Free printables make daily practice simple and consistent.
Are there alternative versions to SATPIN (e.g., PIFR or other orders)?
Yes. Some schools adopt variations like PIFR, DGOULF, or MGDOCK to maximise early word building and match scope-and-sequence needs. There isn’t one “correct” order—what matters is consistency, cumulative review, and daily blending.
When should beginning sounds be taught?
Beginning sounds are first introduced in Foundation (Prep) as part of Phase 2 in the Letters and Sounds program. They are taught daily and practised consistently through Year 1, with ongoing review in Year 2 to strengthen tricky sounds. Short, frequent activities are more effective than long, one-off lessons.
How should beginning sounds be taught?
Start with a small set of sounds such as SATPIN, which allows children to blend and build real words early. Use multi-sensory strategies: See it – flashcards and matching puzzles Say it – oral blending and segmenting games Make it – playdough mats and letter formation tasks Use it – build words with magnetic letters or strip puzzles
What difficulties do students face with beginning sounds?
Common challenges include: Confusing similar-sounding phonemes (e.g., p and b) Struggling to blend smoothly when reading CVC words Forgetting sound–letter matches after a break or holiday Reversals in letter formation (e.g., b/d) Teachers can support by revisiting sounds daily, using hands-on practice (playdough mats, puzzles, strip cards), and providing extra small-group review for struggling students.
