FAQs –Teaching Digraphs

Clear strategies for teaching digraphs in Foundation–Year 1.

What is a digraph?
A digraph is when two letters work together to make one sound, such as sh in “ship” or ch in “chip”. Unlike blends, digraphs represent a single phoneme.
What types of digraphs are there?
Consonant digraphs (e.g., sh, ch, th, ph, wh) where two consonants make one sound. Vowel digraphs (e.g., ai, ee, oa, oo) where two vowels work together to make one sound. Both types are taught progressively in phonics programs.
What’s the difference between a digraph and a blend?
n a digraph, two letters make one sound (e.g., sh = /ʃ/). In a blend, two letters keep their own sounds but are blended together (e.g., sl in slip = /s/ + /l/). This is a common area of confusion for students.
What are common difficulties students face with digraphs?
Many students confuse digraphs with blends, treat the letters as two separate sounds, or reverse sounds (e.g., saying /f/ for ph). Activities like clip cards, flashcards, and I Spy games reinforce that a digraph makes one sound.
How can teachers check if students have mastered a digraph?
Mastery is shown when students can identify the sound in reading, use it in spelling, and recognise it in word searches. The ability to apply it in both decoding and encoding is key.
What strategies help struggling students with digraphs?
Use multi-sensory teaching — tracing, saying the sound aloud, matching pictures to words, and repeating through worksheets, crafts, and games.
When should digraphs be introduced?
Digraphs are usually taught once students are confident with single sounds. They appear in the ACARA Phonics and Word Knowledge strand, supporting early reading fluency.
Can these free digraph printables be used across year levels?
Yes. While designed for Foundation–Year 1, they are also useful for Year 2 intervention or with EAL/D students who need extra phonics support.
