Christmas Playdough Mat Printables
Fine Motor Resources
The last few weeks of school always have a special kind of energy. Kids are excited, routines are a little looser, and Christmas seems to sneak its way into everything we do. That’s why I love pulling out my Christmas playdough mat printables.
They’re simple to prep, a breeze to manage, and most importantly — they keep students learning while letting them enjoy the season. Playdough mats give you a ready-made way to build in fine motor, literacy, and maths practice without it feeling like “work.”
And the best bit? Once you print and laminate them, they’re ready to roll out every year.
Why Playdough?
Playdough looks like play (and it is!), but it also ticks so many learning boxes. Every time children roll, pinch, and shape the dough, they’re strengthening little muscles and developing coordination. That’s what they’ll need later for handwriting, cutting, and other tricky fine motor tasks.
It also helps students:
- Stay calm and focused through sensory play
- Turn abstract concepts (like numbers or letters) into something they can see and touch
- Learn creatively — and we know creative learning is sticky learning
So yes, when they’re decorating a playdough Christmas tree with tiny baubles, they’re having fun… but they’re also practising maths, spelling, and motor skills at the same time. Win-win.
Setting Up a Christmas Playdough Centre
You don’t need anything fancy — just a bit of prep and a routine. Here’s what works for me:
- Print and laminate a set of mats (trees, baubles, stockings, stars — the classics).
- Put out a few tubs of playdough in festive colours: red, green, white, maybe even gold or silver.
- Add some basic tools — rolling pins, cutters, and plastic knives.
- Keep everything organised in trays or tubs for easy grab-and-go.
- Teach students how to share tools, use the dough properly, and pack up.
Once students know the routine, the centre almost runs itself. And in those last few weeks of term, that’s exactly what you want.
Using Christmas Playdough Mats in the Classroom
These mats slot in anywhere. I’ve used them in:
- Maths – Build numbers, fill ten frames with playdough baubles, group stars for addition.
- Literacy – Roll letters to spell festive words like star, tree, bell.
- Fine Motor – Decorate stockings with tiny shapes (great scissor-free practice).
- Calm Corner – Perfect for when a student needs a quiet, sensory reset.
They’re also handy for rotations, small groups, or early finishers.
